The Marco Núñez Community Hope Fund

Hope Begins by Listening.

The Marco Núñez Community Hope Fund transforms compassion into action by connecting people, resources, and opportunities with communities working toward a brighter future.

Inspired by Marco's generosity and commitment to others, the Fund supports locally identified initiatives that improve lives, strengthen communities, and create lasting opportunities.

Beginning in the Andes of Peru, our vision is to inspire a growing network of hope, where even the smallest act of generosity can lead to extraordinary change.

How Hope Began

Hope often begins with a vision. But sometimes, it takes a journey to discover what that vision can become.

The roots of Mundo Esperanza reach back to 2004, when Victor Villacrez and his cousin Marco Núñez began exploring a sister-city relationship between Madison, Wisconsin, and Cusco, Peru. Over the years, that vision evolved into Mundo Esperanza, a nonprofit dedicated to cultural understanding, environmental stewardship, and humanitarian cooperation.

As relationships with communities throughout the Cusco region grew, an unexpected opportunity emerged.

Rubén Aranzabal, then president of the remote Andean community of Tomacaya and an experienced horseman, had a vision of his own: developing alternative trekking routes through the spectacular Hidden Valleys of Salkantay. By bringing travelers through lesser-known villages, he hoped to create economic opportunities for communities often bypassed by conventional tourism.

Through Marco's connections, Mundo Esperanza began working with Rubén and the people of Tomacaya. In October 2023, members of Mundo Esperanza and Sacred Travels joined a trek beginning in Tomacaya to explore the possibilities of this alternative route.

But the journey revealed something far more meaningful than a new trekking experience.

As relationships deepened and conversations continued, community members shared other aspirations and challenges, including the need for reliable water, better infrastructure, and opportunities for their children.

What began as an exploration of sustainable tourism became a deeper understanding of how visitors, communities, and humanitarian partners could work together to create lasting change.

That experience helped shape the philosophy behind the Community Hope Fund: travelers and friends of Mundo Esperanza could become catalysts for hope by connecting the needs and aspirations of communities with people willing to help.

Today, the Marco Núñez Community Hope Fund honors one of the people who helped build those relationships, while carrying forward a much larger vision—turning human connection into opportunity, and hope into action.

From Partnership to Possibility

The relationships established in Tomacaya eventually grew into a major water infrastructure initiative through a partnership involving Mundo Esperanza, Rotary International, Engineers Without Borders USA, and the local community.

The Tomacaya Water Project demonstrated what becomes possible when community leadership, technical expertise, international partnerships, and shared determination come together around a common goal.

But the experience also revealed another opportunity.

During a project implementation trip to Peru, Mundo Esperanza representatives visited two Andean communities—Tomacaya and Huilloc. Rather than arriving with gifts or supplies selected in advance, they took a different approach: asking community members what would make the greatest difference in their daily lives.

The answers were practical, immediate, and deeply meaningful.

At the Tomacaya school, community members identified needs for kitchen and dining equipment, including a pressure cooker, blender, plates, and cups—simple resources that could improve the daily experience of preparing and serving meals for children.

These conversations inspired a new approach to giving. Instead of bringing items that might or might not be needed, why not establish a way for communities to identify their priorities and connect those needs directly with people willing to help?

From that idea, the Community Hope Fund began taking shape.

Building on Mundo Esperanza's established relationships and humanitarian partnerships, the Fund creates a pathway for turning modest contributions into meaningful improvements—one community-identified initiative at a time.

The Tomacaya Water Project showed us what partnerships can accomplish. The Community Hope Fund offers a way for more people to become part of that hope.

Our First Initiative: Hope for Tomacaya's Children

High in the Peruvian Andes, the children of Tomacaya attend a small rural school where even modest improvements can make a meaningful difference.

During a recent visit, community members identified a practical need: better equipment for preparing and serving meals to the students.

The Marco Núñez Community Hope Fund's first initiative is to help provide essential kitchen and dining supplies, including a pressure cooker, blender, plates, cups, and other items identified by the school.

With an initial pledge of $500, we're taking the first step toward meeting these needs.

This is the Community Hope Fund in action: a community identifies a priority, we connect that need with people who want to help, and together we turn generosity into something tangible.

Every contribution, large or small, can make a difference.

How Hope Becomes Action

Local Solutions. Global Partnerships. Lasting Impact.

At Mundo Esperanza, we believe meaningful change happens when communities, supporters, and trusted partners work together toward a shared purpose.

Our experience working with Rotary International, Engineers Without Borders USA, universities, and community leaders has demonstrated the power of combining local knowledge with international resources. The Tomacaya Water Project, supported by a Rotary Global Grant of more than $200,000, is an example of what these partnerships can accomplish.

The Community Hope Fund builds on that experience, providing a way to respond to smaller, community-identified needs that can make an immediate and meaningful difference.

A Partnership Across Borders

Mundo Esperanza USA, a Wisconsin-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, develops international partnerships, raises funds, and provides strategic oversight.

We are working to establish Mundo Esperanza Perú, a locally led nonprofit based in Cusco, to strengthen our ability to coordinate directly with communities, manage local implementation, and document results.

Together, our goal is to connect international generosity with local leadership and accountability.

Our Four-Step Commitment

1. Community Identified
Local schools, community leaders, and organizations identify their priorities and submit requests for assistance.

2. Mundo Reviewed
Requests are evaluated with trusted local partners to confirm needs, feasibility, budgets, and anticipated benefits.

3. Locally Delivered
Approved projects receive support through coordinated local purchasing, services, or implementation.

4. Documented Accountability
Receipts, photographs, delivery confirmations, and project reports help demonstrate how contributions were used and what was accomplished.

Our commitment is simple: Every contribution should have a clear purpose, responsible oversight, and a meaningful result.

Become Part of the Journey

Give Hope. Share Your Talents. Experience the Difference.

The Community Hope Fund is about more than financial contributions. It is about bringing people together, building relationships, and creating opportunities for meaningful participation.

There are many ways to become involved. Support a community-identified initiative, share professional expertise, help develop partnerships, or contribute your time and talents to a project.

Travel With Purpose

Through our affiliation with Sacred Travels, supporters may also have opportunities to experience the communities and landscapes of Peru while participating in meaningful humanitarian activities.

Imagine helping support a school improvement project, then traveling to the Andes to work alongside community members and local partners in bringing that project to life.

Our vision for these working trips combines cultural exploration, personal connection, and hands-on participation in projects that communities themselves have identified as priorities.

Every experience is developed with respect for local traditions, community leadership, and the people whose lives and livelihoods are connected to the project.

Whether you support a project from home or join us in the Andes, you become part of something larger.

The goal is not simply to give something to a community, but to accomplish something with the community.

Sacred Travels is a separate, affiliated travel business. Travel arrangements and associated costs are handled independently of charitable donations to Mundo Esperanza.
